1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I have developed a better understanding of the screen printing process. as previously i had not been using the vacuum beds to do my screen prints. using the vacuum beds to produce my prints was a good experience, because it is how screen print runs are done in industry. i produced a run of 12 prints which all had four colours so i had to be very organised and precise with how i used my time. i learnt easier and more effective ways to make sure all the prints lined up correctly. i did this by lining all the colours up with the last template, rather than using registration marks. so every time i printed a colour i used the black template to position the print on the bed, so that it didn't miss print when it came to the last colour (black).

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
i decided rather than spending four weeks on producing the ellesse brief which i chose, i would spend a week. this was a big challenge as i gave myself three days crafting time and one day where i had booked out the photography studio. I produced all the individual pieces of work for the photo to a standard which was OK for the photo, however if i had given my self more days crafting time they would have been of a better standard. however if i had spent more time on the crafting it wouldn't necessarily mean that the final piece would have been any better. this shows that i should start producing craft work and mock ups do the photographing standard, and develop my photography skills.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
i found that my screen printing brief was the most successful out of the three, as i know have a more organised approach to producing prints. i have also developed my photography skills, i am more confident with using an SLR camera. i have found more interesting ways to take photographs of my prints for example. so in future i will be be booking out the photography studio more to photograph my work, as it adds a more professional and appeal ling feel to the resolutions, this will mean i will have to work to more mini deadlines and spent less time on production and more time on presentation.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
i found that the Major let down of my work was how i organised my time and the way i did my projects. i left my one day brief to last which was not a very good idea. i should have produced the one day brief first, as it would have been more fast paced and i would have been able to develop it if had more time as the module progressed. i should also have had the ellesse brief and the secret blisters brief running co- existent. as this would have given me more time to spend on crafting the ellesse brief. however the speed i produce my work has been developed, i just need to develop the quality along with the speed.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

I will make a more organised and realistic plan, before i start all my modules. i will also make the plans more in depth by adding information such as crit times and workshop times. this will allow me to make mini deadlines for myself, before i start the work.

i will carry on booking time in the photography studios to photograph my work. this will develop my skills in using SLR cameras, and strengthen my final resolutions
and presentation on m work

i will Begin to make my design sheets more neater and organised, this will help my work to be followed better when it comes to explaining my ideas, i will also begin to annotate my ideas better, this is also spending more attention to the presentation of my work.

if i produce another tactile piece i will consider combining crafted work with existing objects, this will add more depth in the photographs and look more professional. i think using fully hand crafted material lost some quality in my final resolution, i could have used things such as a real tennis ball and a table tennis net, this could have had a better effect on my work.

i found that the red/purple/pink design worked the best as it made the gorilla look more friendly. also it fits in well with the bizarre style of lazy oaf, as it is abnormal and different.

the designers looked better without using a black out line around all the shapes, this also worked well as it gave me a chance to experiment with different colours rather than having to worry about black taking up one of the three.

the live trace example, did not work out very well so i designed to pen tool all the design and put them as different layers.

i began by using live trace and live paint to test out how the design would look, i did this because the designs for lazy oaf are in a similar style to the stroke created by the live trace tool.

I used foam board to make the tennis player. i did this so it would add depth to the photograph and the thickness could work well, when photographing the final piece as it will cast interesting shadows. all the detail of the player will be done by using paper cut outs. i will do this so that it has a more overall hand crafted feel.

i have created a shape at the bottom of the 'N'. which symbolises trees, this gives suggestion to the high of big Ben, gives it more of a higheracy.

when producing the designs for London and Paris, i used sanna annukkas work as my main inspiration. i wanted to make a simplified version of the Eiffel tower and big Ben, i wanted to do this by using interesting patterns and shapes and limitation of colour.

i began making all the quotes fit in as one image, so the print would take up the whole page. however this was getting to complicated, so i decided to make a design which would involve all the quotes and work around the concept and quote 'the city has a face'. i looked at inspiration from illustrators such as Steven Harrington, which have an interesting style of character.

he also has a very 60s hippy style which also shows good reference to the style of colours which i am going to use in my print.

I have four interesting quotes which i have selected from my research:

after researching i decided that i could combine all the quotes into one screen print, i was inspired by designers such as:

all these designers have created interesting compositions with type and image, however even though type is used it is very illustrative and there is little details which are noticable unless you look at the work carefully. this is nice effect as is draws the audience to the work.

for the second part of my design practice i have selected three briefs which, will help me develop my understanding and skills in the areas of image making and screen printing. the final products for these briefs will also be used as the main pages in my portfolio. i have chosen three past briefs:

SECRET BLISTERS, which is a screen printing. it asks to produce a screen print, it is a very open brief so i have decided to extend it and make a series of prints. i will spend TWO WEEKS.

ELLESE, this is also a very open brief, it asks to produce a piece of art work to celebrate the 50Th anniversary of the brand, i will create a tactile exhibition piece for this which will develop my crafting skills, on this brief i will spend FOUR WEEKS.

ICA XMAS CARDS, this is a brief which asks to create image for the front of Xmas cards, so i will extend it and create images for sets of cards, which will also include designs for the insides and the envelopes. for this brief i will allow ONE WEEK.

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I have developed my team working skills in this project. it has been a good collaborative practice as we have shared the work load. it has been interesting to develop ideas together and producing work which needed decision making from two different viewpoints. i have organised my time though this project a lot better. the use of weekly time tables has helped me keep on top of my responsibilities in this project, i thought this a very good idea and was one of the reasons why our collaboration was a success

i have developed the way i produce my ideas in this project, because i was working with another designer it gave me a chance to produce my own ideas and then take them through with my partner who had also produced ideas of his own and then pick out the best parts and put them together. this was like having mini crits all the time which helped inform the design decisions which i was making

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
i found that the development of the ideas has been the main strength in this project, as we have decided to take a different approach completely to what is usely produced for o2, this however was researched fully and we came up with the empires idea after looking into a range of different approaches. we then explored the visual aspect of this fully as well by looked at different colour variations and styles of compositions we could use.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
i found that overall the biggest disappointment within my work was the research stages. we did research existing o2 material and we did research existing mobile information booklets. this helped us with layout and ways we could produce the basic formats of our work. however i found that our finished work looked just like what has previously produced for mobile companies but just with a different theme. our final pieces would have been more effective, if we took our concept ideas and researched into more interesting ways in which we could have displayed them. we should also have looked into more interesting ways rather than just posters and billboards and we could have also looked into different stocks for the booklet ideas which we produced.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
when working in a collaboration next time:

i will organise more time to do more radical research, tasks can be asigianed to each person in the collaboration, which will save time and help inform design decisions later in the project. the research should also be done first even if it takes a couple of days

i will do more primarry research in my topic areas and do more research into target audiences, this will help my work to be more informed therfore will make designing a lot easier.

i will work on my presentation skills when it comes to crits etc. this is one of my major weaknesses which i have to spent alot of time perfecting. i need to work on being more formal and speaking of my ideas to other in a way so that they see what iam trying to get across.

present the work produced in a more professional way, one person could be doing all the ideas sheets then the other could take all the ideas produced and make them into nicley produced double page spreads, which would make them look better for submission.

here i have drawn some idea for A format posters which would be in magazines and on bus shellters for example. i have experimanted with the quallity of line for the illustration used. i have developed this because the first style of illustration used, had a very simular line quality and did not show much depth therefore was not very eye catching, it looked very flat.

BEFORE the 2nd Crit

we began to use crests as the link which joins the empire idea to the O2 services. after criting these ideas we found that the ideas of having services linking to different empires was working.however the crests that we had designed before the 2nd crits needed work done to them. as it looked like we had just copied an existing crested and an just added O2 to it. It was suggested that we start making the crests more suitable to the services, so design them in a similar style to what the empires would look like, however change some of the things on them for example rather than having a shield have a Sim card.

know we have a more focused idea we desided to start looking at how we can link the empires and O2 services together. this is so that they can work allong side each other as a set or work as a campain for O2.
we looked at useing coins from each of the empires as a way we visually link all the ideas together. however this would have giveeb us limitation in colour use, also we thought that the empire ideas was not fully potratyed through this idea.

After the first crit, we found that our first ideas (the history of communication) did not come across as well as we expected. it was too confusing and didn't really work well as a set when put together. however we found that there was elements within the design sheets which were of interest. the ideas which were the strongest were the hieroglyphic idea and the simple style of illustration which we used for them. Also it was crited that the ideas behind the Homing pigeons looked like it had potential, therefore it was suggested that we could focus on the idea of empires.

After Research on empires we came up with the idea that we could specify an empire to each of the O2 services. so we desided to focus on the main three o2 servies which are O2 MOBILE/ O2INTERNET and O2INSURE. we desided to link these servics to the EGYPTION/ ROMAN and BRITISH Empires.

We have looked at the most important sections from the history of communication and found decided to focus in on: 3500BC-Egyptians use of hieroglyphic writing/776BC- the use of homing pigeons/1714- the patent for the first type righter/ 1835 the invention of Morse code. this will lead on to the first telephone and than the start of O2.

we have decided to get a solid ideas and concept, first and then decide on how we will be designing the work, at this stage it is certain that we will be working with print.

WE'ER BETTER CONNECTED Commercials

we will not be working with moving image or digital media. however here are some nice examples of existing work produced for 'O2 we're better connected'.

the flow of the adverts both work in clever ways, they both bring across the idea of connectivity very well. there is a wide range of colours used. The visual language, character manipulations and the animated style used; brings a very light hearted feel across. which shows that the we're better connected concept is meant to appeal to a wide audience.

O2-SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO Commercials

These commercials are for O2 see what you can do. they are less appropriate to the style i will be working in. However it is still interesting to see how they have both been approached.

they both use imagery and live footage with digital effects, however the 'see what you can do' adverts are more form with a limited colour pallet. which gives a formal and modern overall appeal. this shows that these adverts have more limited Target audience and is bringing across a different message to the we're better connected adverts.

Background
We believe a more connected world is a better world. From the birds and the bees, to smashing the Berlin wall, all human beings share the instinct to connect.
That's why everything we do is there to make connecting simpler. With the people you like. Or the things you love. From music, movies and games, to football, rugby and facebook. If we can, we'll put you there in person. Like at our Wireless festival in Hyde Park. Or with priority tickets to The O2.
We all like joining up. Doing things by yourself is ok, for a while. But we're better, connected.

Creative Requirements
There are no limits. We're open to anything that brings the idea to life. If you want to script a short film, fine. If you think you can bring the thought to life on a poster, go for it. Or if you want to invent a new product that no-one's thought of yet, be our guest. The only limitation is that we'd like to share the best ideas around O2, and maybe make some of them a reality. So whatever your idea is, it would be nice if we could showcase it.

Other Things We Should Let You Know
We believe in keeping things fresh, positive, and simple. As a brand, we aim to be warm and optimistic. Like a breath of fresh air. That's the feeling we'd like to get coming through in your work.

Any 'Brand Guidelines' To Bear In Mind?
Not really. If our brand was a colour, it'd be blue. But the blue of a beautiful sky on a summer's day. If you want a visual metaphor for O2, you could use oxygen bubbles, but there'd be others.
When it comes to words, keep it natural. Fresh, positive, simple.
And if you're looking for a phrase that holds it all together or sums it up neatly, use 'we're better, connected'.
